Crab Fest 2008 & a bit of Randomness

Crab Festival 50th Anniversary BannerHere's to hoping that we're able to make the Crab Festival this year.  We went last year and had a pretty danged good time, even with the rain.  This time around will be a bit odd because of the lack of a place to automatically stay.  We've got plenty of places we could crash.  It'll just be weird having to actually look for a place to hang out for the weekend.  I don't know, either way I'm stoked.  I'll be anxious to check out the beaches and maybe take Isabelle tide-pooling (one of my favorite things to do as a kid).  Also.  Long live the St. Mary's burger.  I missed out on it last year.  It won't happen again!

I was looking over the pictures from last year's visit to Kodiak and was laughing at how much Kodiak hasn't changed since I was a kid.  Sure, there are a few more paved roads and there are some old businesses that are no longer there (as well as some new ones), but it's still the same old Kodiak.  (Well, with more police.  Don't get me started on that one.)  It's still the kind of place where you take your shoes off when you walk into your neighbor's house.  It's still the kind of place where it's ok to speak your mind and it's even still the kind of place where it's alright to spank your kids in public.

It's small town and because of that, it has this enormous charm to it.  It's obnoxious how expensive it is (face it, it's expensive because they can) and it's annoying that you can't live there and expect to have any decent living unless you're in a pretty specialized field.  I guess that's the incentive of education or to know the right person in the right place at the right time.  Right?

Well, that, or you're fishing, which is something I'd like to do again.  Of course it was always funny to me how we all hated being out on the boat during the season but couldn't wait to get back to it about two weeks after being home.  I would have also liked to have tried (does that make sense?) working on the slope.  Call me crazy.  I guess it's because I'm one of those I'll try anything once types of people.  (-:
